You wuz robbed Paul. Perfect text and image placement as always, not to mention segue of moods. An almost intense sense of place. Class.
In fairness the winning entry does look beautifully illustrated but what's with the Guardian chopping it up into panels like that in the online version? It undermines the whole essential panel/page story relationship that comics do so well (as demonstrated impeccably in your entry!).
Too kind Phil. Thanks. There are links to the full four pages of Paint here: http://www.comicafestival.com/index.php/site/news/2009_graphic_short_story_prize_winner/. It has a kind of 50s feel, which funnily enough is what I was also going for in my story. It is annoying how they chopped it up. Maybe that's just what happens if you can't tell the difference between comics and graphic design?
Hello there. I've been reading all the Observer entries on the net and I just wanted to say I liked yours best. No disrepect to the gal who won it but I thought yours was better.
I'm loving everything I see on your blog. Your writing and pacing is ace. I'm assuming from the standard of your work you do this for a living - where can I buy your stuff?
No, I'm not doing this for a living but I'm working on it. At the moment I'm submitting things to magazines and looking for commissions. So if you have any comics or illustration needs let me know. No job too small.
Also, the various "non-winners" from the Observer competition, including me, are currently working on an anthology of our entries, which will be a very desirable book. I will post details on here as soon as it nears completion.
